STAR Test Math

Picture from: http://www.shodor.org
By doing the STAR practice math questions I learned a few new things such as the x and y axis, slopes and mastering adding, subtracting fractions. For the x and y axis (as you can see the picture to your left) I learned that the x-axis and the y- axis are just two intersections number lines. I used to confuses the two but now I know the x-axis runs from the left to the right and the y-axis runs up and down. I also learned about slopes. Slope equals rise over run. As you can see the graph to the bottom left is y = 2x -5. How you get y = 2x -5 is that if you move back 2 boxes and down to the line, then to left 2 and down back to line, that's how you get the 2x and inside you get 5 boxes, hence were you get -5. For adding and subtracting you find the common denominator of both numbers. As the example below, the denominators are 3 and 2. To find the common denominator you either multiple across or to find the lowest you can list common multiples of each number. For this equation the common denominator is 6. Whatever you do to the bottom you must do to the top. Simply you can take you new denominator and divide it by the previous denominators. So 6 divided by 3 is 2 you now apply the 2 by multiplying it by 1 (the original numerator) same for the other fraction. 6 divided by 2 is 3 so now you multiple the other numerator by 3 and now you have two fractions, 2/6 and 3/6. If you were to add or subtract them the denominator stays the same, only the numerator changes. 2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6 or 3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6. And that's what I learned by doing the STAR testing practice.
