The Hunger Games, 1-7

Choose a quote from the book, write it at the top of your entry and then write about what seems unusual:

Repeatedly Peeta doubts himself such as on page 108 Peeta says,"I hope that's how people interpret the four I'l probably get". It seems like Peeta is either always underestimating himself or he already has a plan for the hunger games. Just like towards the beginning when Katniss and Peeta were introduced to Haymitch, Peeta insisted to take care of Haymitch when he was drunk instead of letting Katniss do it. Since Peeta works at his parents bakery, he knows Katniss pretty well. Katniss would usually trade Peeta's father squirrels she hunted for some bread. Every since Katniss' father died in a mine accident it appears that Mr. Mellark (Peeta's father) was watching out for Katniss and Prim (Katniss' younger sister) and making sure that they had something to eat, hence why he would trade squirrels for bread. Since Mr. Mellark would trade for the squirrels Peeta knew that Katniss was good with a bow and arrow by how precisely the arrow was shot at the squirrel.

I think that Peeta seems unusual and I don't think he's someone you would entirely trust. He's nice and thoughtful of others but it's like he has something hidden inside him. Incessantly he is always saying something good about Katniss. Just like on page 89 and 90, Haymitch asked Katniss if she was any good with a bow an arrow, which she replied, "I'm alright" but abruptly Peeta exclaimed,"She's excellent". In return Katniss questions Peeta saying that he has strength by lifting hundred-pound bags of flour and he knows how to wrestle.

In a way it feels like the author wants you to wonder about Peeta. Constantly Katniss has thoughts about Peeta if he's just really a nice person or has a cryptic plan. On page 72 Peeta complements Katniss which makes Katniss think "Don't be so stupid. Peeta is planning how to kill you. He is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likable he is, the more deadly he is."

  1. This is a very well thought out response! You use quotes effectively with page numbers and do an excellent job using them to express your thoughts. I also appreciate how you reflect on what Suzanne Collins (the author) is trying to do and I agree; it seems like she's making Peeta speak cryptically at times to keep the reader wondering. Judging by how people have reacted to the book, it's working. I've surveyed some students recently and it seems that about 50% of them distrust Peeta at this point in the book.

  2. I agree with you Amanda, Maybe Peeta really is trying to let Katniss know that he is a friend. Like when they were at the dinner table Katniss thought she knew the Avox but Peeta says "Delly Cartwright. That's who it is..." I think Katniss should half believe him.

  3. I agree that at this point in the book you might not be someone who you can trust. Because of his drastic change in emotion, I agree with you. I think that you did a good job referencing the book. And I think the author is doing that on purpose to make you feel more like Katniss.

  4. I totaly agree with this post, especially the part when Peeta always puts himself down.
