Applied Mathematics Semester Review

Last semester I learned about Fermi math and percentage. In the picture to the left represents a Fermi math problem. The question was around how many NFL footballs are used every regular season in the NFL. I started out by figuring out how many games are played each regular season for one team (16) and how many teams there are (32). Two teams play in each game so then you multiply how many NFL games by each team (16) by half of the NFL teams (16). In then which you get 256 NFL games played in one regular season. Roughly 36 balls are used in one game. So now you multiply the 256 NFL games by the 36 footballs used in one game. Afterwards you get 9,216 footballs used each regular NFL season.

For percentage in the picture to the right shows two different percent problems. The first question asks if 17 students like organic bananas and 3 students prefer conventional bananas, what percent of overall students prefer organic bananas? First off the question states what percent of overall students. So you add 17 and 3 and get 20. All you do for percent is you divide 17 (students who prefer organic bananas) by 20 (the overall amount) then multiply by 100 and you get 85%. For the other question is thirty-five percent of dog owners at IA own small dogs and the remainder own large dogs. There are 150 dog owners in all, what percent of dog owners own large dogs? So first of all we have 35% of small dogs and x of large dogs. If you take 35 (%of small dogs) and divide it by 100 then multiply it by 150 (total amount of dog owners) you get 52.5 small dogs. Now if you subtract 150 by 52.2 you get 97.5 large dogs. To turn it into a percent you take 97.5 divide by 150 then multiply by 100 and get 65%.

Ten Terms and Formulas Related to Last Semester's Math
  • Formula of Percent Change: New Value - Old Value      * 100
                                                       Old Value
  • Variables equations that shows distributive property:  x (m + n) = x - m + x - n
  • Percent Formula: x / m * 100
  • Perimeter of a Rectangle Formula: 2 X Lengths + 2 X Widths P = 2 L + 2 W
  • Area of a Rectangle Formula: Length X Width
  • Circumference: 2 * pi * radius = pi * diameter
  • Area of a Circle: pi * r(2) = 1/4 * pi *d(2)
  • Percent: x / m * 100 = n %
  • Volume: 3.14 x Radius x Radius x Length
  • Rectangular Prism Surface Area:   2 × l × w  +  2 × l × h  +  2 × w × h
