Dear Mr. Daniel F. Akerson,
Carbon Dioxide emission takes a huge toll on the Polar Ice Caps and vehicles are part of it. There are multiple reasons why we should lower the emissions that are released each year. First of all, the sea level is rising at a rapid rate due to the ice caps melting because of the carbon dioxide emission. Second, since the sea level is rising, it’s effecting the temperature. Third, as the sea levels continue to rise, the coastal plains are greatly affected. For these reasons, carbon dioxide emissions must decrease immediately.
The sea level is rising due to the increasing amount of carbon dioxide emitted every year. As of 2010, there are currently 8,476,192 GMC vehicles that are contributing to the 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide polluted annually. The melting of the ice caps will throw the global ecosystem out of balance. The ice caps are fresh water, therefore when they melt, they will desalinate the ocean. The desalination of the Gulf current will wreck the ocean currents, which regulate temperatures.
Since carbon dioxide emissions produce greenhouse gases that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, it causes the temperature to rise. In the last 100 years, Earth’s average surface temperature increased by about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit with about two thirds of the increase occurring over just the past three decades. Since the ice caps are white, they reflect the sunlight, much which is reflected back into space, further cooling Earth. If the ice caps melt, the only other reflector is the ocean. Darker colors absorb sunlight, further warming the Earth. As the temperature rises, changing landscapes in the Arctic Circle will endanger several species of animals.
Warmer waters equal more hurricanes. As the temperature of the ocean rises so will the probability of more frequent and stronger hurricanes. As the climate changes, a warming of the seas create “thermal expansion”. Thermal expansion has already raised the height of oceans 4-8 inches, according to the National Geographic. Following which warmer air can hold more water vapour, increasing the level of rainfall and bringing flooding to inland areas. The effects of this cause economical consequences, such as billions of dollars in damage due to hurricanes, which effect all countries of the world. Seventy percent of the population lives on coastal plains, therefore three out of six homes will be flooded by hurricanes.
On behalf of these reasons above, the Carbon Dioxide levels must rapidly decline. Due to Global Warming, you must concentrate your efforts on creating more fuel efficient vehicles that are powered by alternative fuels.
